Mixed price trends at Sunday Bazaars

LAHORE: Mixed trends were witnessed in prices of seasonal vegetables in the last Sunday Bazaar of July.

A price list issued by the Lahore Market Committee showed a hike in price of green chilies (desi) by 24 per cent. It was sold for Rs63 to Rs68 a kg this week.

The prices of pumpkins and cabbage rose by 12 per cent each. Pumpkins were sold for Rs9 and cabbage between Rs68 and Rs74 a kg. The price of onions rose by 11 per cent. They sold for Rs18 to Rs20 a kg.

Three varieties of potatoes were available at Sunday Bazaars. Potatoes with thin skin sold for Rs39 to Rs42 a kg; a sugar-free variety was sold for Rs23 to Rs26 a kg and potatoes from cold storage for Rs17 to Rs19 a kg.

The price of carrots (Chinese variety) rose by seven per cent. They were sold for Rs40 to Rs43 a kg. Native carrots sold for Rs42 to Rs45 a kg. Garlic (Chinese variety) was sold between Rs236 and Rs250 a kg – around six per cent higher than last week.

Native garlic was also available for Rs202 to Rs215 a kg and garlic from Quetta for Rs220 to Rs230 a kg. Ginger (Chinese) sold for Rs65 to Rs71 a kg.

Prices of brinjals, fenugreek, bottle gourds, tomatoes, lemons (desi), cauliflowers, okra, cucumbers (desi), turnips, bitter gourds, radishes, spinach, capsicums, taro roots (arvi), peas and round gourds (desi) were lower than last week.

Brinjals sold for Rs38 to Rs41 a kg –37 per cent lower than last week; fenugreek for Rs37 to Rs40 a kg – 33 per cent lower; bottle gourds for Rs42 to Rs45 a kg – 32 per cent lower; and tomatoes for Rs63 to Rs68 a kg –28 per cent lower (tomatoes were sold in open market for Rs100 a kg).

Lemons (desi) sold for Rs64 and Rs69 a kg – 23 per cent lower than last week; cauliflowers for Rs52 to Rs55 a kg – 23 per cent lower than last week; okra for Rs72 to Rs78 a kg – 18 per cent lower; cucumbers (desi) for Rs41 to Rs44 a kg – 12 per cent lower; and turnips for Rs32 a kg – 11 per cent lower.
