KARACHI: The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) could not find a single woman throughout the province suitable to have been nominated for the slots of mayor, chairperson or vice-chairperson for district council, municipal corporation and town committees in the local government.

The party has always claimed to champion the rights of women but the candidature seem to hint otherwise. Though many PPP-nominated women had contested the local bodies’ election at union-council level and won the seats of councillors, not a single woman has been nominated as chairperson.

As the election of mayors and chairmen of metropolitan, municipal corporations, district councils and town committees is approaching fast, the PPP announced the candidates for local bodies in all districts of Sindh on Thursday. Addressing a press conference, food and parliamentary affairs minister Nisar Ahmed Khuhro announced the names of the LG candidates for Sindh. The decision revealed that most of the candidates nominated are kith and kin of PPP leaders or elected representatives.

The party nominated Arslan Shaikh for the slot of chairman of Sukkur Municipal Corporation. He is the son of PPP senator Islamuddin Shaikh. Meanwhile, the party has announced the name of Aslam Shaikh, former Rohri taluka nazim and brother of former PPP MPA Taj Mohammad Shaikh, for the chairman of district council.

In Thatta, former MPA Ghulam Qadir Palejo, father of PPP senator Sassui Palijo, has been nominated as district council chairman. For Qasimabad Municipal Committee, the name of Kashif Shoro, a relative of LG minister Jam Khan Shoro, has been announced. Sheharyar Wassan, a relative of Manzoor Wassan, has been nominated for the post of district council chairman in Khairpur while Amjad Shah Jilani, nephew of outgoing chief minister Qaim Ali Shah, has been allotted the seat of Khairpur Municipal Committee.

In Mirpurkhas district, Mir Anwar Talpur has been named for slot of district council chairman and Haji Ahmed Khan Talpur has been nominated for the slot of vice-chairman of the district council. Both are said to be relatives of PPP MNA Mir Munawar Talpur.

Mehbood Bijarani, the brother of PPP MPA Mir Hazar Khan Bijarani, has been nominated for the chairman of district council in Kashmore.

In Larkana district, the party has nominated Khan Muhammad Sangro for district council chairman and Aslam Shaikh, the president of Larkana Chamber of Commerce, has been nominated for the slot of chairman of the municipal corporation.
