HYDERABAD/KARACHI: Monsoon rain continued for the fifth consecutive day in Hyderabad on Sunday with the city receiving a torrential downpour. Localities left flooded by 112 millimetres of rainfall on Saturday were still not cleared when the rain started again on Sunday afternoon.

At a press conference, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement demanded the union committees badly affected by the rain should be declared calamity-hit. However, information minister Moula Bux Chandio told the media that the situation did not require setting up of relief camps.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, Hyderabad received 52mm of rainfall on Sunday, 112 mm on Saturday and 29 mm on August 4. Parts of Latifabad, City and Qasimabad talukas, especially low-lying areas and those with defective drainage systems, remained submerged.

Sunday saw light showers in areas of Karachi, such as Gulshan-e-Hadeed, Surjani Town, Federal B Area and Defence. Met department’s regional director Abdul Rashid said the province was in dire need of rain and for the past couple of years the southern parts of the country were not receiving sufficient amounts of rain, which has brought drought conditions.

Rashid anticipated moderate rains in southern Sindh till Monday night.  He added that the monsoon season is not over yet and he expects it to continue until mid-September.
