ISLAMABAD: The Chinese government on Tuesday awarded 131 scholarships to Pakistani students in various disciplines to pursue studies in Masters, PhD and other advanced learning programmes.

At an admission awards ceremony held at the Chinese Embassy, Ambassador Sun Weidong distributed admission letters among the students.

“I would like to congratulate the winners for the Chinese Government Scholarship for the 2016-2017 academic year,” said the ambassador.

Weidong said that this year, China Scholarship Council has awarded Chinese Government Scholarships to 131 new Pakistani students, of whom 107 were recommended by Pakistan’s Ministry of Interprovincial Coordination.

“It is my pleasure to learn that the students here today are from all over Pakistan, not only from big cities,” he stated.

He said that students are going to be educated in different fields in various Chinese Universities, including: computer science and technology, business administration, finance, physical chemistry, architecture, civil engineering, broadcasting communication, international law, journalism and so on. This will cover bachelors, masters, PhD, and advance training programmes. “I believe what they learn in China will prove to be very useful to future development of Pakistan and their hometowns,” he added.

He mentioned that the Chinese government has always regarded the people of Pakistan as dear friends, trusted partners, good neighbours and iron brothers. We attach great importance to cultural and educational exchanges with Pakistan. Every year, The China Scholarship Council provides 220 Chinese Government Scholarship (Bilateral Program) to Pakistani students.

“I am proud to say that this is the largest number of Chinese Government Scholarship for any single South Asian country”, he mentioned.

More than 2,000 Pakistani students has been awarded the special universities scholarship this year, he said.

He stated that after the state visit by President Xi Jinping to Pakistan in April 2015, China and Pakistan are working together for enhancing political mutual trust, expanding economic and trade cooperation and deepening cultural and education exchanges. With the implementation of projects under China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, more and more job opportunities are being created, not just for labourers, but also talented professionals. He cited an example from just a few days ago, where the Port Qasim Coal Fire Power Project recruited hundreds of engineers who would be sent to China for training.
