ISLAMABAD: A nationwide door-to-door verification exercise kicked off on Wednesday to update the electoral lists, with estimates suggesting that the number of voters will rise to around 98 million after the revision process is completed.

The verification campaign will continue for 20 days. The number of voters is likely to cross 100 million by the time the next general elections are held in 2018.

Election Commission of Pakistan Secretary Babar Yaqoob Fateh Muhammad, briefing the media about the salient features of the exercise, said verification officials will visit permanent addresses of new CNIC holders to include those still not on voters lists in the list of their areas, besides deleting the names of deceased voters and holders of cancelled CNICs from the electoral rolls.

According to the data shared by Nadra with the ECP, a total of 4.8 million people have attained computerised identity cards since the voters lists were updated last year.

There are 93 million registered voters in the country. Among them, 52.3 million are male. Interestingly 157,860 people holding CNICs have died during this period as per Nadra’s data.

The secretary said these numbers were tentative and would be added and deleted once verification officers give their final report.

The election commission has hired the services of 52,883 verifying officers to conduct the exercise.
