ISLAMABAD: The National Institute of Historical and Cultural Research (NIHCR), Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU), Islamabad on Friday observed Independence Day.

The national flag was hoisted and a cake was cut to mark the 69th Independence Day falling on Sunday, August 14.

QAU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Javed Ashraf, who was the chief guest, hoisted the flag on the NIHCR building.

The chief guest also inaugurated the NIHCR’s publications display corner. The ceremony was attended by a large number of students, teachers and the staffers.

The QAU vice-chancellor said that “we are fortunate enough to have an independent sovereign state where people belonging to different religions, sects, culture, ethnicity and languages have complete liberty as citizens.

“The gathering shows a feeling of independence and love of the country which our forefathers liberated after matchless sacrifices,” he said.

Prof Ashraf said that August 14 was a day of great happiness for the nation because it “reminds us that we must educate our community to stand united and work for the betterment of education and progress of the country”.

QAU Department of History and Dean Social Sciences Chairman Dr Sayed Wiqar Ali Shah urged for working hard to achieve progress and prosperity.

NIHCR Officer Incharge Umar Hayat said the NIHCR has been doing its best to dig out the true history and culture. He said that Pakistan came into being after innumerable sacrifices by our forefathers. “It is our duty to educate our children about how Pakistan became a reality”.
