ISLAMABAD: Former senate chairperson Mohammedmian Soomro’s nephew, barrister Fahad Malik, was shot dead during a clash between two groups, here on Monday.

Police said groups headed by Raja Arshad and Malik Tariq clashed in F-10/3 during small hours of Monday. The clash happened hours after their initial confrontation in a coffee shop in F-11 Markaz.

Police said they brought six to seven persons from the coffee shop to the Shalimar Police Station, where Fahad and others mediated between them.

The two groups agreed on a patch-up and left the police station.

Sub-Inspector Rashid Ahmad, who is an investigation officer for the case, said Raja Arshad and others later allegedly opened fire on the two land cruisers belonging to the Malik Tariq group (IDN-11 and VY-1) in F-10/3 after they left the police station.

Fahad received four bullets and died on the spot, while Malik Tariq received bullets to his leg and was admitted to a hospital.

The Malik family hails from Gujar Khan.

Fahad was brother-in-law of businessman Zulfi Bukhari.

SSP (Operations) Sajid Kiani suspended Shalimar SHO Inspector Zulfiqar Ali on Monday for failing to arrest the suspects.

Inspector Fayaz Ranjha has been made the new Shalimar SHO.

Ranjha, while talking to The Express Tribune said the police were working to trace and arrest the suspects.

The investigation officer said that an FIR would be registered after receiving an application from the victim’s family.

A police official, who requested anonymity, said the bone of contention between the two groups who fought in the coffee shop was a girl.

He said the house of the suspect in E-7 had been cordoned off.

The official said though the police brought the two groups to the police station, their cars were not checked and weapons not collected.

Had their vehicles been searched and weapons collected, the incident could have been averted, he said.

No FIR had been registered till the time this report was filed on Monday night.

Meanwhile, Soomro visited the victim’s house on Monday evening, where, while talking to the media he demanded arrest of the killers at the earliest.

Fahad’s body has been shifted to a mortuary at Polyclinic hospital after a post-mortem of the body at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims).

Police said the post-mortem report would be received on Tuesday.

It is pertinent to note here that murder incidents have been on the rise in the capital.

A total of 27 people were murdered in Islamabad during the three months of May, June and July this year.
