No laws for the powerful

QUETTA: It is unfortunate that the Balochistan MPA who had previously been charged with ‘manslaughter’ for killing a traffic sergeant in Quetta has been given bail even when the CCTV footage of the incident showed the MPA uttering harsh words to the cop and then running his vehicle over him deliberately. Yet, he has been trying to close the matter by expressing his willingness to pay compensation to the family of the deceased.

The MPA, Abdul Majeed Khan Achakzai’s release on bail only reiterates that the influential are above the law in the country. An influential despite pleading guilty and even being charged for the crime, can get away with it in lieu of a nominal amount of money in the name of Qisas and Diyat law. The fact that the Balochistan MPA’s case was later transferred to the Anti-Terrorism Court from Balochistan High Court is big enough to show its severity, yet the verdict is the reflection of the helplessness of the authorities and the law when an influential is a culprit.

It would be in the interest of law and the people, if the Supreme Court takes a suo moto notice over the matter and gives a verdict upon it that does justice to the victim and his family.
