Nawaz left for Saudi Arabia in fear of Shehbaz: Aitzaz Ahsan

Opposition leader in the Senate Aitzaz Ahsan sees an escalating rift between former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his younger brother, Shehbaz, claiming that the elder Sharif has dashed to Saudi Arabia to impede the political rise of Punjab Chief Minister.

Nawaz Sharif to leave for Saudi Arabia on Saturday

Both the Sharifs are in Saudi Arabia. Their departure has created enough rumours at home. The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leaders have repeatedly said that the senior party leadership is holding talks with Saudi officials.

However, Ahsan, a senior Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader, claimed Nawaz had not been called to Saudi Arabia, in fact, he left in panic after his brother Shehbaz’s announcements of meeting leaders there.

“The Sharif brothers are in disagreement on issues. Shehbaz Sharif says he should be made the next prime minister, but the votes are with Nawaz and Maryam, and not with Shehbaz,” Ahsan said.

“Shehbaz is trying very hard to become the next prime minister,” he added. “But it is important now to know what the Sharif brothers are doing in Saudi Arabia. Shehbaz Sharif left in Raheel Sharif’s plane to show that he is on the side of the army and the judiciary. Nawaz went by a commercial flight.”

Although, the PPP leader went on to say, Shehbaz Sharif made a phone call here] and said that he was meeting with high officials in the Saudi kingdom, “but even the Saudis cannot do anything for the Sharif brothers anymore.”

Rumours abound as Sharif leaves for Riyadh

About the political future of the PPP, Ahsan sounded positive. “The PPP’s future looks promising. There is a division in every political party but the PPP. Under Bilawal Bhutto’s leadership, the PPP will perform well” in the next general elections, he said. He denied the PPP was in alliance with Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) chief Dr Tahirul Qadri.

The Sharif brothers’ previously unannounced visit to Saudi Arabia has triggered speculations in the political circles. Almost all opposition parties claim that the Sharifs are trying to get another National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO)-type deal ahead of the general election.
