Over 300 lives lost, 1,000 injured in accidents in Jamshoro


KOTRI: There were four major incidents that shook Jamshoro in 2017 while 143 lives were lost in accidents on the Indus Highway. Another 90 lost their lives in accidents on the Super Highway.

A final year student, Naila Rind, of Sindh University Jamshoro’s Marvi Girls College committed suicide on January 1, 2017 after she was allegedly blackmailed by a teacher of a local institute. On the other hand, an MBBS student studying at the Liaquat Medical University, Noreen Leghari, ran away from home to join the Da’ish. She was recovered safe and sound in an army operation in Lahore.

In the suicide attack on the shrine of Hazrat Lal Shahbaz Qalandar, 90 people lost their lives while another 375 were injured, including women. In the hometown of Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, Jhangra, Tania Kahskehli was gunned down for refusing a marriage proposal.

Roadblocks, clashes paralyse major cities

Many people lost their lives in other accidents and incidents during 2017. Around 143 people died in traffic accidents on the Indus Highway while another 700 were injured, whereas accidents on the Super Highway claimed the lives of 90 people while another 300 were injured. In other road accidents, 124 people were killed and 694 were injured.

Another 45 bodies were recovered during various incidents in the district. Around 25 people were killed due to electrocution, cold and collapsing of roofs while 17 people drowned after falling in and off the Kalri Baghar Feeder, alManzar Road and Indus River. Three people died due to a faulty injection, gastro problem and a heart attack. Another 20 were killed and 35 injured in clashes and firing incidents.

Apart from that, 21 people died in train accidents while 11 men and women committed suicide. Five women and children were kidnapped from various places and a woman and four men lost their lives to honour killings. Overall, a total of 527 people lost their lives in the year while 1,694 were injured.
