Harassers, not protectors

KARACHI: According to a report in this paper, a case has been registered against personnel of the Dolphin Force of Punjab for harassing female workers of the Punjab Food Authority. The Dolphin Force was established in cooperation with Turkey for improving the law and order situation in the province. In the wake of this case, one cannot help but assume that the incident is not certainly a rare occurrence in not just Punjab but the entire Pakistan where police personnel and those from other law-enforcement bodies harass females often on the grounds of conducting investigations. Needless to say, harassment in the country is rampant.

It is plainly due to underreporting that such complaints are not brought forward. Moreover, the incident only made it to the media because officials from another prominent provincial body were harassed. Had it been one involving a layman, the complainant would have been threatened for raising his/her voice against those who are meant to be saviours and protectors and not violators of one’s rights.
