Punjab University affairs

LAHORE: The education department in Punjab had not even resolved the issue pertaining to devolution allowing provinces to have their own provincial education commissions independent of the federal Higher Education Commission, that the matter of the Punjab government demanding of Punjab University to give its land to a religious seminary arose. The issue arose because the land originally allotted to the seminary was instead used for the construction of a route of the Orange Line Train Project. The VC of Punjab University resigned on January 6, citing the reason for his resignation the government’s demand to allot the land belonging to the university to the seminary. Although deans of different academic programmes and other staff members of the university too were against the demand, financial mismanagement is also allegedly being mentioned as another possible reason for the VC’s resignation.

As the matter can be only resolved through a thorough probe, the Punjab government should not only order investigation into the matter but also make sure that the university’s land which is also a part of the campus is not allotted to the seminary, as it can be constructed in any other locality in Lahore.
