National Security Advisor (NSA) Lieutenant General (Retired) Nasser Khan Janjua has said that the early closure of Afghan conflict is key to unlocking the economic potential of the region.
He is presently visiting Iran to attend the 2nd Tehran Security Conference on the invitation of the Government of Iran.
Speaking as a keynote speaker on the occasion, Janjua presented Pakistan’s perspective on key security challenges that the region currently faces, particularly the decades-old conflict in Afghanistan.
He stressed the significance and urgency of cooperation among the regional and international players to seek an early closure of the Afghan conflict to pave way for realising the economic potential of the region.

Nasser Janjua highlighted the challenges faced by the region, including the great power rivalries of West Asia, policies aimed at containing Russia and China, and above all the grave challenge posed by terrorist groups such as Islamic State (IS).
He reminded the audience of the valiant performance of armed forces and law enforcement agencies (LEAs) in the country, who are conducting military operations in a bid to eliminate terrorism from the region.
“Pakistan had lost 60,000 lives and sustained $120 billion in losses to the economy since 9/11,” Janjua said.
“The countries of the region should approach regional issues with in a framework of cooperation and collaboration instead of competition and confrontation,” Janjua outlined while talking about the way forward to overcome regional challenges.

“Rather than indulging in public rhetoric, regional countries should take practical measures in a cooperative framework to resolve the complex issues facing the region, especially the narcotics problem in Afghanistan, which is breeding terrorism” he stressed.
