Fire in Lahore's mini-market takes four hours to subside


LAHORE: Hundreds of shops at a five-storey plaza, the Global Store (TGS) located in Gulberg on Lahore’s MM Alam Road, were gutted on Tuesday when a fire broke out in the mini-market.

The unfortunate incident took place in the morning, and while rescue officials and fire-fighting teams reached the area and started putting out the fire, it took them four hours to finally douse the flames.

Twelve vehicles belonging to the fire department, two ambulances, three rescue vehicles and 50 staffers from Rescue 1122 took part in the operation. Officials of the city district government and police also remained at the scene of the incident to control any law and order situation that may occur.

The blaze, however, crept quickly to other corners of the building and had soon engulfed the entire structure located dangerously close to a Shell company petrol pump.

The cause of the fire is yet to be known, while no reports of casualty have surfaced so far.

In two separate incidents that took place on Monday, two people, including a minor girl, were burnt to death in Lahore.

The first incident occurred on Guru Mangat Road when a stationed truck caught fire. As a result, the victim, identified as Bilal, was trapped inside the truck. In no time, the fire engulfed the entire vehicle and he was burnt to death. In the second incident, the minor girl was injured.

At least seven people were killed and 14 injured in January 2017, as a result of a fire that broke out in labour quarters of a private construction company working on the Lahore Orange Line Metro Train (OLMT) project in Mahmood Booti area of Lahore.

Residents of the area said flames started to erupt on the upper floor of the building, which was being used as barracks for construction workers.
