National Assembly passes bill to bring FATA under SC, PHC jurisdiction

ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly has passed a bill to bring the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) under the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court and Peshawar High Court.

The bill, which wasn’t part of the Friday’s agenda of the lower house of parliament, was moved by the government where routine proceedings were suspended to discuss the brutal incident of Kasur at length.

It aims to extend the jurisdiction of the apex court and PHC to tribal areas “for safeguarding their rights and providing them proper administration of justice in accordance with the Constitution”.

The bill was tabled by Minister for Law and Justice Bashir Virk amid opposition by Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) against the same.

Earlier, the house strongly condemned the brutal incident of Kasur and emotionally-charged lawmakers demanded public executions of murderers and rapists where opposition termed it failure of the government.
