Sustained efforts against rape needed

LAHORE: After days of protests over the rape and murder of an eight-year-old in Kasur, the situation has returned to normalcy as Rangers have been deployed in the area. However, the fight against rape and child abuse must continue. Protests should not erupt again when an incident makes it to the media. Despite the uproar over the incident, two other incidents of rape and murder have also been reported from Lahore and Karachi. This makes it necessary that alongside action against the culprits, it is equally important to educate the young minds on the subject and to caution them against it.

Unfortunately, despite more work being done for child rights and protection against sexual assault, reports show more crimes taking place in the year 2017 as compared to the year 2016. This puts the initiatives and the organisations formed to serve the purpose in question. Clearly, there are loopholes within the laws, within their implementation and within the efforts because of which the situation has only worsened over time.
