ECP notifies revised seat allocations for general elections


ISLAMABAD: Punjab will officially have the revised 143 general seats, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (39), Balochistan (17) and the federal capital three general seats in the 272-strong National Assembly.

The number of general seats in Sindh (61) and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (12) would remain unchanged in the general elections scheduled for this year.

In the light of the notification of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Wednesday, the number of direct seats of the country’s largest province of Punjab has been reduced by seven seats — from 150 to 143 seats.

The number of general seats in K-P has seen an increase of four seats to 39. In Balochistan, the number of general seats has been increased by three seats, to 17 seats and the number of general seats in the Islamabad Capital Territory has increased from two to three seats.

Overall, out of 342-member National Assembly (including women seats), the fresh seat allocation implies that the total seats of Punjab in the National Assembly will decrease by nine seats (seven general and two women seats) and will increase by five seats in K-P (four general and one woman), three seats in Balochistan (two general, one woman) and one general seat of the federal capital. The number of seats for Sindh and Fata will remain the same.

After legislation on the delimitation of constituencies for the general elections 2018, the ECP has notified fresh seat allocations.

The ECP’s official data detailed the number of seats of the provinces in the National Assembly and the subsequent share of districts, tribal agencies and the Islamabad Capital Territory in the National Assembly and provincial assembly seats in the light of the provisional results of the population census, 2017.

The ECP, in pursuance of Section 19(1) and (4) of the Election Act, 2017 read with Rule 8 of the Election Rules, 2017, it had determined the share according to the results of the population census which were officially published on January 3, 2018.

According to an official press release, in accordance with the formula and as per the 2017 population census, the share of Islamabad in the National Assembly seats would be as one seat each on 667,193 individuals out of total 2,001,579 population, with a share of total three seats.

Similarly, one each seat for the National Assembly has been allocated for each area/agency of Fata under the formula of 416,380 populous with total population of 4,996,556 of 13 agencies/ areas of Fata, the statement added.

The ECP said in Punjab with a total population of 110,017,465 in 36 districts, under the formula, one each seat of the National Assembly had been allocated on 780,266 populous of its each district while one each seat of the provincial assembly had been fixed on 370,429 district populous.

In Sindh, it said, with the total population of 47,893,244 in 29 districts, one each seat of the National Assembly had been allocated on 785,135 populous of each district of the province while one each seat of the provincial assembly was fixed on 368,410 district populous.

In Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, with the total population of 30,523,371 in 27 districts, one each seat of the National Assembly had been allocated on 782,651 populous of each district while one each seat of the provincial assembly was fixed on 308,317 district populous, it added.

The ECP said in Balochistan, with the total population of 12,344,739 in 34 districts, one each seat of the National Assembly had been allocated on 771,546 populous of each district of Balochistan while one each seat of the provincial assembly was fixed on 242,054 district populous.
