A newly furbished neurology and psychiatry ward with same old staff of Pims opened its doors to patients on Wednesday.
Renovated at a cost of only Rs16 million, the ward now has an air conditioner, lights and switches fans and windows too for summers when there is no electricity to run these modern gadgets.
The most important step, however, was separation of the spaces for neurology and psychiatry patients. For the past few decades both had tormented each other in the same ward.
The air conditioning system of casualty ward, however, awaits attention of authorities. State Minister for Capital Administration and Development Division (CADD) Dr Tariq Fazal Chudhry announced renovation of other wards of Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims).
The Medical Ward-4 designated for neurology and psychiatry patients has been equipped with new equipment, infrastructure and proper ventilation system. Four new beds have also been added into the 44-bed ward.
Since the inception of the hospital the same old beds and equipment was used that has been replaced with new one, said Pims Deputy Director Dr Aniza.
The areas for neurology and psychiatry patients have been separated and the whole setup has been rearranged and organised with assessment, rehabilitation and doctors’ spaces separated.
Likewise, forensic medicine department has also been renovated and reorganised to manage things properly.
Dr Tariq Fazal Chudhry who inaugurated the wards said new central air conditioning system would start working before the advent of summer and waste management system would also be installed for the hospital for which discussions are underway with the environment ministry.
Although it is the last year of the five year term of present regime, he termed the dysfunctional central cooling system and the lack of waste management for years a criminal negligence on the part of previous administrations and governments.
He also said in the upcoming Senate session the bill seeking separation of the hospital from the Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University would be passed. After the separation of the hospital new recruitments would also be started to fulfil human resource needs.
Reminding about some new initiatives at the hospital he said new emergency, pathology department have been added and CCTV cameras have been installed to make it secure.
Dialysis centre to be made functional by PBM
The hospital reached an agreement with Pakistan Bait-ul-Maal (PBM) to enhance the dialysis facilities at the hospital. According to the agreement the PBM will provide new machines and financial help to make functional dialysis unit building lying useless at the hospital for the last three years.
The patients will not have to go to private and other hospitals after the expansion of dialysis services, he stated.
