Imran under fire for statement against parliament

Opposition leader in the National Assembly Khursheed Shah on Thursday rejected anti-parliament comments made by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chairman Imran Khan during the rally organised by Pakistan Awami Tehrik protesting Model Town carnage of 2014, Express News reported.

Speaking to the media in Lahore, Shah said his party [Pakistan People’s Party] dismisses remarks made by Imran, where he had criticized the parliament. He added that by using language that undermined the parliament, Imran had reiterated former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s stance hence there was no difference between the two leaders. He said those who do not accept the parliament, their resignation holds no value.

The PPP leader emphasised that failure of government could not be considered a failure of the parliament. He said the PPP had always honoured and struggled to strengthen the august house and will continue to do so in future.

Shah highlighted that the country was a nuclear power because of the parliament, the borders are protected because of parliament.

Addressing the crowd in PAT rally on January 17, Imran had indicated that he may tender his resignation from the National Assembly as “the current parliament has violated very basic principles of democracy by voting in support of the corrupt Sharifs”.

Imran had slammed parliamentarians for bringing a resolution in favour of former premier Nawaz Sharif who, he claimed, was ousted by the Supreme Court of Pakistan on corruption charges. “You will not find a similar example in any democracy in the world where the parliament endorses that a corrupt person can continue to lead a political party,” he said.

Despite participation of over 18 political parties in the protest against Punjab government, the turn out failed to match the hype giving PML-N a reason to celebrate.

Maryam Nawaz posted a video of empty seats at the protest, saying that this was masses’ answer to ‘conspiracy and conspirators”.

Meanwhile, Radio Pakistan quoted Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif as saying that the nation had rejected the protest call of the opposition.  “The opposition has already tested such tactics in the past but failed to achieve its goals,” he said in an interview.

Federal Minister for Pakistan Railways Khawaja Saad Rafique took to Twitter to thank Lahore for ‘rejecting’ the call of protest as well.

He also criticized Imran for his statement against the parliament.

Imran, however, stands by his comments despite criticism. “When a Parliament, which must protect nation’s interests, passes a person-specific law allowing a disqualified person guilty of Rs3 billion money laundering, tax evasion, concealment of assets, forgery and perjury to become head of a pol party, then such a law is a “laanath” on Parliament,” he wrote. “In fact in this specific context “laanath” is a mild word to use. If anyone disagrees, I challenge them to do a public poll on what ppl think of such a Parliament. I can guarantee most will condemn it.”
