AD Khwaja to remain IG Sindh, SC tells Sindh government
The Supreme Court, on Thursday, quashed Sindh government’s attempt to replace current Inspector General Pakistan (IGP) Sindh AD Khawaja.
The government nominated Sardar Abdul Majeed Dasti, a grade 22 officer, as Khawaja’s replacement. However, the apex court said, “Khawaja is to retain his post.” Under the leadership of Chief Justice Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar, a three-member bench was formed to hear the case.
Sindh names police chief to replace AD Khawaja
The provincial government filed an appeal, in SC, against Sindh High Court’s (SHC) verdict to replace Khawaja. During the hearing, Sindh government’s lawyer stressed that SHC declared Police Act 2011 as constitutional, the court gave IG the option of conversion to police.
However, SC granted the appeal to provincial government, and ordered AD Khawaja to remain as IG Sindh. SC also said in its order that appointment of IG Sindh will be subject to judicial proceedings, “there will be no status of any federal government on issues of appointment.”
Earlier this month, Sindh government nominated Sardar Abdul Majeed Dasti, an officer of the Police Service of Pakistan (PSP), for the post of Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Sindh, replacing incumbent Allah Dino Khawaja, PSP (BS-21).
In October last year, the federal government had promoted Sardar Abdul Majeed Dasti to grade-22.
Sindh government approaches SC to oust AD Khawaja
Prior to his promotion, Dasti was serving as additional inspector-general (research and development) under the command of IG Sindh Allah Dino Khowaja, who is now junior to Dasti.
