Swine flu outbreak

LAHORE: It has taken only days for the swine flu virus to spread as a viral epidemic across Punjab — with as many as 131 cases in the province, 23 reported deaths and seven new cases emerging only during a 24-hour span. Although the disease is an epidemic which can be avoided with minor precautions, given the scale of the outbreak, the situation is apparently out of the health department’s control. Due to incompetence on the part of the authorities concerned to take timely measures, the virus is widespread now. Yet the provincial government has still not put forward any concrete measures to deal with the situation at hand. Moreover, reports on the miserable condition of government medical facilities in the province are repeatedly making it to the media. The situation might worsen if immediate emergency measures are not taken.
