SC to take up seven major cases today


KARACHI: The Supreme Court (SC) will conduct a hearing at the SC’s Karachi Registry on Saturday (today) of the suo motu case regarding the extrajudicial killing of Naqeebullah Mehsood in an alleged fake encounter by former Malir SSP Rao Anwar.

A three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar, will take up the matter to see progress in the investigation into the killing in an alleged staged encounter.

Judicial sources said Counter-Terrorism Department AIG Sanaullah Abbasi had filed a sealed report in the case. A notice has already been sent to SSP Anwar to appear before the court today.

The bench, which also comprises justices Gulzar Ahmed and Faisal Arab, will also hear important suo motu cases regarding poor conditions of public hospitals in Sindh, the sale of substandard packed milk and admissions to private medical colleges.

The apex court will also take up matters relating to the encroachment of 35,000 amenity plots in Karachi, non-supply of clean drinking water and sanitation conditions in Sindh as well as environmental pollution in the coastal areas due to discharge of untreated, poisonous industrial waste into the sea.
