Regulating social media platforms

SIALKOT: Social media channels in Pakistan are not well regulated considering the magnitude of their use across a wide spectrum of society. Lynching incidents in India over the spread of fake news on WhatsApp can reach Pakistan sooner than one can expect them to. As these incidents have mostly occurred in rural areas of the country, where the locals are quick to act upon such rumours without doing anything to verify them, it is important that measures to control the spread of fake news in the country are put in place. Since similar incidents have already occurred in Pakistan, communication channels’ regulation is needed more than ever.
