Winds of change in Lyari?

HYDERABAD: For decades, Lyari has remained a PPP bastion. Despite being one of the localities of Karachi city to suffer the worst of the turmoil due to conflicts among political parties, having lost its many residents to alleged extra-judicial killings, alleged forced disappearances and most importantly the decade-long ‘Lyari Gang War’, the area continued to support the PPP. However, this time around Lyari residents seem to be turning against the PPP, as on July 1 PPP chairman Bilawal’s procession was pelted with stones.

Now it appears that Lyari residents have come to the conclusion that their support for the PPP has brought them only misery. The area is still one of the poor, least developed localities of Karachi. The PPP chairman should have realised that what the party has done for Lyari before he launched his election campaign from the so-called PPP bastion.
