Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairperson Imran Khan on Friday claimed that the defining Avenfield verdict is the beginning of a new Pakistan as he reacted to political rival Nawaz Sharif being sentenced to 10 years in prison.
“Now the people who had plundered money will go to jail instead of to the parliament,” he said in reference to the politicians involved in corruption scandals.
The PTI supremo was addressing party supporters in Swat and thanked the system for the verdict passed against Sharif family members.
“Corruption has played an increasingly big part in our politics. The foundation for this menace was placed by these two brothers [Sharifs] when they made deals in Jauhar Town in 1990s,” Khan told reporters.

He added that he was the first man who blew the whistle on the corruption in the purchase of the Mayfair flats.
“The Sharif brothers destroyed national institutions so that their corruption could not be probed,” claimed the PTI chief.
Khan said that politicians were responsible for destroying institutions and spreading the cancer of corruption in Pakistan.
“This ruling sends a powerful person to the jail. Until now, only the poor and weak would have to go jails for petty crimes,” the PTI chief maintained.
“Hopefully, the sun of hope will rise on July 26 after general elections. I had been talking against corruption since 1998,” he said.
Nawaz, Maryam decide to return for accountability court hearing
“When I used to ask back then about the London flats, PML-N leaders used to shrug their shoulders. It is through the grace of Allah that Panama papers were leaked, while Nawaz Sharif’s son admitted that the flats were owned by him.”
He added that Maryam made a statement to the court in which she said that she did not have any property anywhere.
“I raised the issue in the parliament to probe the Panama issue. But then we were forced to go into the streets and approach the Supreme Court to get justice.”
In a landmark verdict, an accountability court sentence deposed prime minister Nawaz Sharif to 10 years in prison and daughter Maryam to seven years in the Avenfield reference case.
