Delayed Imran Khan biopic to finally release this year

KARACHI: A biopic on the former cricketer and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan, has been in the works for the last six years. The first teaser of the film titled Kaptaan, emerged back in 2013. Since then, the film has been stalled for reasons more than one. However, it has now been confirmed that Kaptaan is all set to hit screens this year.

Talking to The Express Tribune, lead protagonists Saeeda Imtiaz and Abdul Mannan revealed crucial information about the film. Mannan will be seen essaying the role of Khan while Imtiaz will be playing his first wife, Jemima Goldsmith.

“The idea of Kaptaan came around in 2011. We had a workshop that year, which complied the whole idea of the film. A year later, we started filming,” Imtiaz explained.

“The film was earlier supposed to be released in 2013, right before the elections, but Imran sahab injured himself after an unfortunate incident. We had to immediately discontinue the project,” the Wajood actor added. She continued that she met the cricketing legend in late 2013 after Kaptaan had completed filming. Imtiaz also mentioned that the producers had taken Khan’s consent before starting the project, however, they weren’t keen on continuing it after his injury.

Imtiaz stated that Goldsmith herself was extremely excited to watch Kaptaan hit the screens across the world and tell Khan’s untold story. “I had an email conversation with Jemima back in 2013, in which she said that she had loved the way we’ve portrayed her in the film. She was extremely happy when she came to know that I will be playing her onscreen,” the starlet revealed. At one point, Imtiaz was also supposed to meet Goldsmith in London but the meeting was cancelled due to ongoing protests.

Kaptaan is majorly based on Khan’s personal life. Speaking of his role in the film, Mannan revealed that he didn’t really know much about the PTI chairman’s life. He said, “There was an obvious physical resemblance but I knew that I still had a long way to go. I had to learn how he talked, how he walked, what he did, what he thought. Once, I spent a whole day with Imran sahab and observed him so I could portray him to the best of my abilities.”

Mannan added that the film includes aspects of Imran’s life that no one has ever seen before. “It’s 60% based on his personal relationships such as his mother and how her battle against cancer influenced Imran sahab to build a hospital under her name. Kaptaan will show his relationship with Jemima,” he explained.

Will the upcoming biopic also show Khan’s marriage to Reham Khan and Bushra Maneka? “No. The film is just based on the beginning of Khan’s political career, the crises he faced and his marriage to Jemima only. The film is still complete but now we need to hire a new director. There is some re-shooting and re-editing that needs to be done,” replied Imtiaz. Mannad added that initially there was supposed to be a character essaying Benazir Bhutto but due to certain sensitives, the part had to be omitted.

Amid obvious hurdles, Imtiaz and Mannan believe that Kaptaan will surely hit screens this year. However, a final date hasn’t been released yet.
