LARKANA: The accountability court has delivered judicious judgment sentencing former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz and her husband Captain (retd) Safdar to imprisonment for 10, seven and one year, respectively, in the Avenfield Apartments case. Hussain Nawaz and Hassan Nawaz, who were fugitives in the same case, have been declared absconders.
Hussain Lawai of the Pakistan Stock Exchange is in the NAB custody to have allegedly facilitated the opening of 29 fake accounts in Summit Bank, Sindh Bank and United Bank Limited. According to the FIR, billions of rupees were deposited into the said accounts, including that of a company allegedly owned by Asif Ali Zardari and his sister Faryal Talpur. Do we really want change and accountability?
If yes, we need to remove the supports of the looters of public money by all means. We need to condemn the corrupt lot across the board.
If we won’t correct our wrong priorities with regard to the eradication of corruption, our children — who are deprived of better education, healthcare and clean drinking water — and our educated youth — who are deprived of good employment opportunities — would tomorrow ask us why we did not condemn the corrupt and play our role in holding them accountable.
Corruption has arrested the economic and social progress of Pakistan, a resource-rich country teetering on the brink of economic disaster.
Corrupt politicians and bureaucrats have accumulated bottomless wealth by plundering the national exchequer. It is mainly because of the loot and plunder by the rulers that the common people have been inexorably falling deeper and deeper into poverty. The plunderers of the national wealth should be punished in accordance with the law, and their assets confiscated and utilised for the welfare of the common people. The media should stop describing convicts as victims of political intrigue.
