Donkey 'Hero' dies after abuse by political workers

An animal rescue organisation said on Monday that Hero, the donkey abused political workers, died on Monday at the organisation’s shelter.

The animal rescue organisation, Ayesha Chundrigar Foundation (ACF), had taken the donkey in after receiving a call from a man who had found the creature in Karachi’s Gulshan-e-Iqbal area severely injured and bleeding. The word “Nawaz” was spray painted on its body.

The incident occurred reportedly after Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) Chairperson Imran Khan referred to supporters of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) as ‘donkeys’.

Hero versus Pakistan’s villains

ACF had been regularly posting updates on the animal’s treatment and condition. “His internal injuries due to the violence he faced, were too much for him to bear,” read the organisation’s statement. They described the violence inflicted on the animal when he first came in, “beaten to a pulp, punched in the face and abdomen several times, nose broken, kicked all over his body until he collapsed, has rope marks and a car rammed into him.”

This was not the only instance of animals being abused in the election season as a video went viral the same week which showed a dog covered in PTI pamphlets and stickers.
