Afghan president congratulates Imran Khan on election victory

Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani on Sunday called Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairperson Imran Khan to congratulate him on winning the July 25 elections.

During the telephonic conversation, Ghani extended his best wishes to the prime minister-in-waiting, adding that the change in leadership would help further solidify the relationship between the two countries.

Ghani said Imran Khan is a popular figure in Afghanistan and the country’s youth consider him a hero. Because of Khan’s popularity cricket had become the sports of choice in Afghanistan, he added.

The PTI chief thanked the Afghan president for the grand gesture and accepted the invitation to visit the neighbouring country. Pakistan desires peace and prosperity in Afghanistan, said the PM-in-waiting, adding that his party also gives special importance to the Pak-Afghan ties.

Promising to visit Afghanistan soon after forming government in Islamabad, the PTI chief said that his party’s government will revitalise the bilateral relations between the two countries.

Imran Khan declares victory in elections, promises ‘Naya Pakistan’

Earlier, PTI had announced that Imran Khan would be sworn in as the prime minister before August 14.

It was reported that the party had inched a little closer to its target of forming the government after it had stepped up contacts with independent legislators to bring them into its fold.

Khan has promised that accountability, austerity, good governance, tax reforms, pro-poor policies, friendly relations with neighbouring countries and his party’s core electoral promise of ‘change’ will form the cornerstones of his government-in-waiting.
