PTI finalises Firdous Naqvi's name as opposition leader in Sindh Assembly

KARACHI: After becoming the second largest party in Sindh, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has finalised the name of Firdous Shamim Naqvi for the post of leader of the opposition in the Sindh Assembly, party sources confirmed on Monday.

Sources privy to the development told The Express Tribune that Naqvi, who is the party’s Karachi division president, has started consultation with opposition parties in Sindh.

There are a total 130 general seats in the provincial assembly. The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has emerged as the single largest party with 77 seats while the PTI has secured 23 seats, Muttahida Quami Movement-Pakistan 16, Grand Democratic Alliance 11, Tehreek Labbaik Pakistan two and Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal one seat.

The PPP has already announced to form the government and nominated Murad Ali Shah as the chief minister.

PTI set to secure majority in Punjab Assembly

PTI has to appoint its opposition leader in the coming days. Party sources said that PTI is considering appointing Khurrum Sher Zaman as parliamentary leader of the party in Sindh.

“Zaman has served as parliamentary leader in the last provincial assembly. Let’s see what the party decides,” a PTI senior leader, who won a provincial assembly seat, said.

Meanwhile, Naqvi claimed that the party will first consult with other opposition parties, including MQM-P and GDA and then finalise the name of the leader of the opposition in the Sindh Assembly.  “I am the party’s Karachi president and most senior, but the final decision will be made by the party,” he said.
