Katrina Kaif responds to KJo's take on item numbers

Bollywood film-maker Karan Johar has been very local about the issues that pertain to the Indian film industry. He’s been talking a lot about women empowerment through films and most recently, opened up on how item numbers – which are often used by film-makers to make cash and have nothing to do with the storylines – objectify women.

Accepting the fact that he himself has resroted to such songs in his films, the director apologised, reported Times of India. He added that he would never include any such numbers in his projects from now on.

Johar had stated that songs such as Chikni Chameli and Sheila Ki Jawani were strictly meant for women to be objectified. They do not develop the plot of the film and are only used to entice the male audience. He added that the word “item” itself is offensive to women.

In response, Katrina Kaif – who has many item songs to her credit – shared that it’s up to the person dancing on the song to decided. She explained that she never felt objectified in Chikni Chameli or Sheila Ki Jawani. The superstar continued that people need to stop characterising every woman who performs an item number and that sometimes, it can just be about celebrating herself. “It depends on the angle and lens it’s being seen with,” concluded Kaif.
