Ban on underage domestic helpers

KARACHI: It is an encouraging move that the Punjab’s provincial government has drafted the ‘Punjab Domestic Workers Bill of 2018’  that reportedly puts a ban on children below the age of 15, being hired to work as domestic workers.

Evidently, there are children under the age of 15 working in different fields and not just at someone’s houses as domestic help, such as tea shops and garages, all over the country. Instead of obtaining an education, these little children are forced to work under the bonded labour system.

As the bill mentions that the employer if foundered to comply with provisions of the law or abuse a worker shall, on conviction, be punishable with fine or imprisonment and be greatly fined.

It is high time for all other provinces, especially the province of Sindh, to also impose this ban on child domestic helpers.
