Fitness enthusiast and author Sarah Kamal Muggo talks to us about her new fitness book, the content of which suggests practical lifestyle modifications and diet alterations to help the women of Pakistan lead a healthier lifestyle. She shares with us her inspiration and passion for health, fitness and literature

Tell us a bit about your recently launched book Fitness Fun, Nutrition and Lifestyle in Pakistan.

In Pakistan there are no books in the fitness genre that actually cater to the country’s young girls and women’s fitness needs. I’ve set out to remedy this with a guidance manual for those interested in improving their nutrition and fitness lifestyles. This book encourages and inspires a positive change. A healthy Pakistani diet combined with an exercise and training regimen for your particular body type are health essentials. It includes researched information, personal experiences of trial and error as well as first-hand interviews and routines from professionals.

What inspired you to write a book about fitness?

Sensing a gap in the knowledge available, prevalent to Asian body types and shapes as well as lifestyle changes that are real to us in our cultural setup, and modifications that are suitable to our environment, I wanted to produce a management guide for educated females seeking the right way to start their journey towards a healthier lifestyle from a young age.

What do you enjoy most about writing?

Your mind knows a thousand moods. What felt right half an hour ago might no longer seem satisfactory so I cherish the liberty to add and edit as I desire.

How do you feel about 30 days fitness challenges?

I think they are great when you’re simply looking for something to get you going. Once the results start to show, the sense of achievement plants the desire to carry it on further.

What are your views on Keto and other fad diets?

They are good as short term boosters. I believe that intermittent dieting, meaning eight hours eating from when you wake up and 16 hours fasting is known to be the most effective lifestyle diet. There is a whole chapter on such diets in the book.

The book is first of its kind in Pakistan and is primarily written for the women of Asia, what sorts of modifications are suggested to best fit Pakistani lifestyle?

Diet plans in my book are based on things available to us and meals that we can easily prepare as well. Diet does not connote starvation; all food groups are vital and play different roles in our bodies, hence any one group cannot be omitted. Eating local and seasonal vegetables and juices is recommended.

What was an early experience where you learned that language had power?

I have always read and researched on topics that I like and so written and authentic material is invaluable to me. There is a satisfaction in being able to touch the material that you are reading and not just ‘swipe’ through the pages. Jane Fonda’s fitness language always felt powerful to me. I used to have a fitness book tucked in my purse and I want the younger generation to enjoy that as well. Success to me would be if all school/college going girls carry the book with them. I, God willing hope to see my book as part of the curriculum in our schools one day.

In your opinion what are three best books that everyone should read?

Lose Your Weight Not Your Mind by Rujuta Diwekar.

Fitness walking by Snowdon Les and Humphreys Maggie.

The Complete Book of Juicing by Michael T. Murray.
