PTI's former MPA Baldev Kumar seeks political asylum in India

PESHAWAR: Former Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) parliamentarian Baldev Kumar on Tuesday, sought political asylum from New Delhi.

According to sources, Kumar is residing in India along with three members of his family after requesting Indian Prime Minister Narender Modi to grant him political asylum.

The ex-PTI MPA’s family members were unaware of any other developments in the case.

“Ever since we have broken ties with him, we have no idea where he resides, so we cannot confirm his exact location,” Tilat, a relative of Kumar, told The Express Tribune; adding that Kumar, along with his family, had left for India around eight months ago, soon after his bail request was approved.

Last year, the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) had acquited Kumar in Soran Singh’s murder case.

Singh was elected to the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Assembly on a seat reserved for minorities. Kumar ranked second on the list.

However, during Kumar’s oath-taking ceremony, PTI legislatures and other lawmakers protested his presence in the house and hurled abuses at him.

Kumar’s family includes his 15-year old son, an 11-year old daughter, and his wife, all of whom had left for India in January of 2019, according to sources at The Express Tribune.
