Makers hopeful for a reboot of 'The Office'

After years of speculation, a The Office reboot may finally be in the works at NBC.

According to Deadline, the channel is hoping to bring back the immensely popular comedy for its newly announced streaming service, Peacock.

Speaking to the publication, NBCU’s Bonnie Hammer, Chairman of Direct-to-Consumer and Digital Enterprises, said, “It is my hope and goal that we do an Office reboot.”

NBCUniversal names streaming service ‘Peacock,’ to launch in 2020

The reboot would fit into NBC’s strategy for Peacock, as the streaming service has already announced new versions of Battlestar Galactica, Saved By the Bell and Punky Brewster. NBCU recently reacquired the rights to The Office from Netflix for a hefty $500 million. The series is expected to depart the streaming giant by the end of 2020 and arrive on Peacock in October of 2020.

The Office comes back to us in January 2021. It is my hope that we can figure what that great reboot would be,” Hammer said. “We are having conversations.”

Not everyone, however, is excited for the reboot. Steve Carell has stated multiple times that he does not wish to see The Office return and is worried about how audiences would react to Michael Scott-like behaviour in today’s political climate.

Peacock will be the exclusive streaming home of The Office and Parks and Recreation, with The Office arriving in October 2020 followed by Parks and Recreation in January 2021.
