Police launch probe into ‘brutal attack’ on Talal Chaudhry

Fayyaz Chauhan says legal action will be taken if police complaint calls were false

Two days after former minister of state for interior Talal Chaudhry was brutally attacked by unidentified individuals, police in Faisalabad on Sunday formed a committee to probe the incident.

A four-member committee will record statements of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader and the party's lawmaker, Ayesha Rajab Ali.

The committee has been tasked with submitting an inquiry report within three days.

Talal’s family sources told The Express Tribune that he was on his way to Madina Town from home when unidentified persons stopped his car and tortured him.

However, videos circulating on social media painted a different picture. According to them, the PML-N leader, holding his left arm claiming it to be fractured, was seen outside MNA Ayesha’s residence.

On the other hand, president of PML-N’s Punjab chapter Rana Sanaullah also announced the formation of a fact-finding committee to investigate the attack that party sources claimed was carried out by the brothers of Ayesha Rajab Ali.

The committee will be headed by senior party leaders Saira Afzal Tarrar and Akram Ansari, and will inform the committee about the facts of the matter.

'Strict action will be taken'

While addressing the media, Punjab Minister for Information Fayyaz-ul-Hasaan Chauhan said the Faisalabad police received calls from both Talal Chaudhry and the woman MNA. He said legal action will be taken if the complaint calls were false.

The provincial minister added that Talal had embarrassed his party, as well as the entire country's politics.

Referring to Maryam Nawaz, the PTI minister said that it was to be seen when she would suspend Talal from the party.

Furthermore, Chauhan maintained that the Punjab government has formed an inquiry committee and once the investigation is completed, strict action will be taken.

Hours after the news of the incident broke, the former minister took to Twitter and said the incident had "nothing to do with any woman MNA".

He requested media outlets to wait for him to issue a detailed statement about the incident.

Late in the night, MNA Ayesha Rajab Ali also took to Twitter and criticised the discussions taking place regarding her on both the media and social media.

She requested people to refrain from falling for rumours. "I am a mother, a sister and someone's daughter and I come from a respectable family. I have nothing to do with this," she wrote.
